Available: OA Switchboard plugin for OJS 3.5

August 31, 2026

Supporting Diamond journals in increasing the visibility of their open access output among research funders, institutions and consortia

The integration plugin connecting Open Journal Systems (OJS) with the OA Switchboard is now compatible with OJS 3.5.0.x. Journals running OJS 3.5 can start using the plugin right away.

Once enabled, the plugin automatically sends a set of public article metadata to relevant research funders and institutions via the OA Switchboard when an article is published. The metadata is captured at the point of publication and shared with the institutions affiliated with the article’s authors and the funders supporting the underlying research.

This happens automatically, with no additional manual work required from the editorial team, helping diamond open access journals make their published research more visible to the organisations that fund and support it.

Documentation is available in English, Portuguese and Spanish, along with a demo video covering installation and use of the plugin.

The plugin was developed as free and open source software by Lepidus Tecnologia for the OA Switchboard, with Openjournals.nl as a testing partner. Its development was made possible through funding from the Max Planck Digital Library.

How to get started?

Preconditions:

  1. Join the OA Switchboard as a participant by signing the Service Agreement. To find out more, get in touch with the OA Switchboard. As part of onboarding OA Switchboard, you will be provided with a userID and password.

  2. To prepare your OJS instance, your system administrator will need to set up secure storage for your OA Switchboard credentials. Your journal must also have a registered ISSN, either for its online or print edition.

Getting the plugin up and running is simple:

Download and install the latest release compatible with OJS 3.5 from the OA Switchboard plugin releases page on GitHub. In OJS, go to Settings → Website → Plugins → Upload a New Plugin and upload the package. Then enter your OA Switchboard credentials in the plugin's settings.

Important note: Direct installation through the PKP Plugin Gallery will be available soon.
